Launceston Tennis Club

Cornwall, England

Finals Day - Sunday 11th September 2016

Launceston Tennis Club's single finals day was held on Sunday 11 September 2016. There was good support for the players from a sizable crowd of spectators who were treated to cream teas.

The men’s final was a repeat of last years “Battle of the Brothers” with Graham playing Kevin Worth. Kevin seeking revenge from last year’s loss got off to a bad start Graham’s greater consistency in windy conditions bringing him the first set 6-2. The second set was far more competitive and evenly matched with the watching crowd getting involved and eventually went into a tie-break. In the tie break Graham raced into an early 5-0 lead only for Kevin to seize the momentum and drag it back to 5-5. Graham however was then able to close out the tie break 7-5 to win the set 7-6  and to retain his men’s single title equalling Chris Werrans 10 mens titles.

Graham Worth Beat Kevin Worth 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

The ladies final like the men’s was a repeat of the previous year’s final with Sarah Statton taking on reigning champion Shannon Sandy. In a high quality first set that swung back and forth between the two Shannon came out on top taking it 6-4. A feature of the set was Shannon’s use of drop shots into the wind and Sarah’s comments that she is too old!!!

The second set featured a lot of Deuces but with Shannon being the stronger player on the day winning it 6-2 to retain her title for a 6th year running!

Shannon Sandy Beat Sarah Statton 6-4, 6-2

The junior boys final was contested between Will Heard and Henry Cornish - with some very good tennis being played, County under 12 champion Will retained his title winning 6-2 6-2.

In the junior girls final Charlotte Halls and Emma Gillard are very evenly matched - both girls playing some great rallies, Emma coping better in the wind, became champion for the first time 6-2, 6-3.

In the Men's Plate final, Morgan Craig proved to consistant with his definsive game for Jo Tucker winning the match 6-2, 6-2

The boys plate final was the closest match of the day with both boys giving their all, playing through slight injuries.

Chris Thorns took the first set 7-6, Matthew Ryall the second 6-4 and in the match tie break Matt was the victor 10-7.

The junior doubles final was then played with Chris pairing up with sister Issey and Matt with Josh Cavey.  The singles had taken its toll on Chris and with the match just being one set Matt and Josh won 6-1.

Thanks to Adam Baker who ran the tournaments this year.
